Due to the development and rapid expansion of supermarkets, many small local businesses are unable to compete
The growth of supermarkets in some countries has made it difficult for small local business to compete. Some are of the belief that the end of local business equals the death of local communities. I believe that the death of a local business, to some extent, lead to some difficulties in local communities, not complete death, but there are also some other causes such as the Internet and the Media to the death of local communities.
The rise of supermarkets has led to the closure of local retailers, which have in turn caused some problems to people. To spend a great deal of time traveling to the nearest shopping center is one of the problems. Besides the waste of time, doing one’s shopping from big supermarkets costs more than the local ones. Moreover, under urgent circumstances, the lack of local shops might lead to more problems when there is no much time to waste. I believe in the long run, buying from local shops strengthen friendship among people.
Even though the presence of big supermarkets is one of the modern phenomena that have resulted in the aloofness among people, the Internet, and the Media play vital roles too. Nowadays, a lot of people from every age and every walk of life spend a lot of time watching bewitching TV series on HBO, Netflix, etc. The social networking apps and websites such as Facebook, Twitter and especially Telegram in Iran, with their enticing forums, involve people in the virtual world for hours. All these fascinations have stripped people of all that comprised good old days of the past, local communities included.
To sum up, the death of local shops, which can be due in large part to big supermarkets, can be one of the causes of the death of local communities, but not all causes. Some other modern phenomena such as the Internet and the Media play vital roles in the death of local communities.
